Santorum: Workers Built that Company Too!

VERONA, PA - At this year's Faith & Freedom Coalition conference, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) gave an impassioned speech on the future of the conservative movement, imploring the Republican Party to not simply be the Party of business owners, but to also be the Party of the average American worker.

In his 20 minute address, Santorum discussed the need to reach all segments of the economic ladder with a conservative message of empowerment, and not simply rely on talking to the company boss.  This theme, which was the hallmark of his 2012 presidential campaign speeches as he traveled the nation and emerged victorious in 11 Republican primary elections, is more critical now than ever in the aftermath of President Obama's successful re-election.

POLITICO's James Hohmann gave the following account of Santorum's speech:

"Santorum: Why Romney Didn't Win"
By: James Hohmann, POLITICO

Rick Santorum ripped Mitt Romney's campaign Thursday for mishandling President Barack Obama's "you didn't build that" gaffe last summer.

The former Pennsylvania senator recalled all the business owners who spoke at the Republican National Convention.

"One after another, they talked about the business they had built. But not a single-not a single -factory worker went out there," Santorum told a few hundred conservative activists at an "after-hours session" of the Faith and Freedom Coalition conference in Washington. "Not a single janitor, waitress or person who worked in that company! We didn't care about them. You know what? They built that company too! And we should have had them on that stage."

Santorum did not mention Romney, who he challenged in the primaries, by name during a 21-minute speech in a dim ballroom at the Marriott (a company on whose board Romney sits). But there was no doubt who he was talking about.

"When all you do is talk to people who are owners, talk to folks who are 'Type As' who want to succeed economically, we're talking to a very small group of people," he said. "No wonder they don't think we care about them. No wonder they don't think we understand them. Folks, if we're going to win, you just need to think about who you talk to in your life."

Trying to carve out a role as a leading populist in the 2016 field, Santorum insisted that Republicans must "talk to the folks who are worried about the next paycheck," not the CEOs.

"Our leaders don't accurately reflect who we are," he said. "They reflect the interest groups around here who are lobbying for an advantage. Everyone who is up here is wanting an edge for their company or their industry. We've got to get away from that."

Santorum won 11 primaries and caucuses in 2012, including Iowa. On his way out of the room, Santorum paused to greet Iowa social conservative leader Steve Scheffler. The two agreed they should meet up when Santorum comes to Iowa this August...

... Other speakers at the low-key evening session agreed with Santorum's point.

Mike Huckabee, who during his own 2008 run for president said that Romney "looks like the guy who fired you," said that Republicans need to reach out more to "the average person Rick Santorum is talking about."

"He is so absolutely right," the former Arkansas governor said. "The Republican message is often so horizontally presented that people often get lost in that spectrum."...

Not just America either. The Israelis did not riot to get rid of a certain flavor of immigrant for no reason, and European bloggers are not making note of outsiders taking their jobs away, breeding like rats, and living off their welfare systems because the Easter Bunny ran out of jelly beans, yes, jelly beans I say.

After reading this article I am so sick. I know for a fact that a highly skilled commercial carpenter is not being paid a living wage. When Government and Companies do not respect the employee enough to appreciate the talent that is involved it is a no win situation. With TRUE unemployment rates hovering around 25 % we do not need any guest workers. It is degrading to a persons mindset to work hard and still not be able to rise above poverty in this country. The democrats want immigration for votes, The Republican business owners want them for cheap labor. This is why WE THE PEOPLE must find a Leader whom respects the women who helped build that company. Because if we didn’t work they would not have the ability to make the profits. This is where the Establishment of the Republican Party has wronged the American Public. Rick Santorum made a speech Thursday evening that needs to be heard by every working AMERICAN. He respects you and your skills go read here at patriot voices He is the last beacon of HOPE for America.

I can honestly can say after following Rick Santorum and watching him respond to questions from the general public he isn’t just a politician. He is a leader with a gift to actually hear and feel the emotions of the people in this country. He is genuine with the words he speaks. It is not Rhetoric that comes from his mouth. It is genuine concern out of the love he has for this country and its inhabitants. Rick Santorum was and still is and will be the Peoples Choice for President. In 2012 if America could have selected our opponent for Obama it would have been Rick Santorum. The GOP establishment (money mongers) has selected 2 very poor choices. The last one was a grave mistake and a disservice to our country. The people gave the House of Representatives a VICTORY in 2010 over the ill conceived poorly planned OBAMACARE and with ROMNEY having passed a ROMNEYCARE bill all the work and determination of WE THE PEOPLE was thrown under the bus. Rick Santorum having spent numerous years in congress would have had a much larger leg to stand on and would have been able to deliver the wrongs that we are all seeing now as a result of OBAMACARE based on his comprehension of what went wrong in the bill. WE THE PEOPLE will select our candidates or this GOP party will never be able to right the wrongs of this administration.

As far as politicians selling us out to foreign banks and CEOs, do you know who gets the interest from your credit card? In the US that was, before credit cards, before the 1980s, credit was provided locally, in large cities and small towns, and all that interest paid stayed here in the USA. Now who gets it? Congress allowed this, and facilitated, but You The People said nothing, and few if any will ever do anything about it.

Also at that time, labor unions were at their peak, taxes were at their peak, and so was America’s economy.

Rick, good point, but you must also realize that if the GOP wants to become the party of the Middle Class it also needs to make amends with a large sector of the Middle Class.
That is Union members, who are like myself strictly Independent Voters.
I am first Pro-Life and a 3rd generation Union Member by choice. I was very disappointed when I heard you back away and basically apoligize for working with the AFL-CIO in Pa. Charity Fundraisers to the Panel at the RNC Meet the Canidates Event.
Rick you should never apoligize for helping causes that show no boundaries only encourage others to follow your LEAD!

We Republican are a fight against History Revisionist that are deleting important history about this subject we the people built this Country. The Obama Administration have been busy for a long time now in our public school and college supplanting American History with Liberal and Islamic history. Liberal Communist have been doing this very same thing with our Public Education since the 1930’s. I have a deep long memory for historical facts. So you can understand my OUTRAGE when at age 62 I found out that Black Americans form the NRA against Southern Democrats that made them register their weapons and then came and seized them !!!! That’s right the Black party was Republican and this is who we have to win back with History. Had this one thing been taught at all to all of us Black and white in public school / college During my life time PR Obama would have had no chance to become President. Our fight is a information battle of true History.

Yes! This is why I like and respect Rick Santorum. The Republican party needs to get out the flip charts and ask the kinds of tough questions that Rick Santorum is raising. Rebuilding can be done in 3 years, if the party will cut away the dead wood and remember the people they are ultimately trying to serve.

1) That’s what Obama said, and why he won.
2) If anybody thought, or thinks, that foreign investors have America’s best interest in mind, they are fully demented.

Senator Rick Santorum is the only leader in the Country that really gets it! He has compassion for all people. He is genuine and faithful. I cannot wait to go to DEC and watch him sworn into the office of the Presidency! May God watch over you, protect you, and guide your steps, may you continue to have the favor of his hand!
