Rick and Karen Santorum to Receive William Wilberforce Pro-Life Leadership Award

Washington, DC - Former Republican presidential candidate and Chairman of Patriot Voices Rick Santorum and his wife Karen Santorum have been chosen to receive the 2013 William Wilberforce Leadership Award from the Students for Life of America at today's Students for Life Summer Social in Washington, DC.

The Wilberforce Leadership Award is named for the British social justice and human rights activist, William Wilberforce, who led the fight to abolish the slave trade and was successful in helping to end slavery in Great Britain.  This award is given to pro-life leaders each year who, like Wilberforce, are working to create and uphold laws that will eventually abolish the greatest human rights threat our nation faces, abortion.

"Karen and I are both deeply committed to life at every stage, and are grateful that Students for Life of America have acknowledged that commitment with this award," said Rick Santorum.  "The Declaration of Independence states that we are endowed by our Creator 'with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.'  Life is first for a reason.  Because without life, no other rights matter.   We believe that every life has value and every life must be protected."

Rick Santorum served in the U.S. Senate from 1995 - 2007 and has been a leader in the fight to protect the unborn for the last two decades, most notably leading the fight to pass the Born Alive Infants Protection Act in 2002, the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act in 2003, and the Unborn Victims of Violence Act in 2004.

"Students for Life of America is proud to bestow Sen. and Mrs. Rick Santorum with the 2013 William Wilberforce Leadership Award," said Students for Life of America President Kristan Hawkins. "From the political to the personal, the Santorums are tireless advocates for Life, never wavering from their pro-life commitment to honoring each and every human life. It is a joy to recognize such exemplary pro-life leaders who are at the forefront, just like William Wilberforce himself, of the abolitionist movement."

Earlier this month, Senator Santorum traveled to Austin, TX to lend his support for legislation before the Texas legislature that would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy and require abortion facilities to meet basic health and safety standards.  The legislation passed both houses and Governor Perry signed it into law last week.  Also while in Austin, Senator Santorum met with dozens of Students of Life who traveled from all over the country to show solidarity in support of this legislation.   Earlier this week, Rick Santorum expressed his support for another pro-life bill at the state level.  This time the bill is before the North Carolina legislature, and it would increase protections for mothers and unborn children and prohibit abortion based on gender.

In June, 2012 Rick and Karen Santorum launched Patriot Voices, a grassroots and online community of Americans committed to promoting faith, family, freedom and opportunity.  They are the parents of seven wonderful children: Elizabeth, John, Daniel, Sarah Maria, Peter, Patrick and Isabella "Bella."  Bella was born with a condition called Trisomy 18 and wasn't expected to survive her first birthday.  Beating all the odds, Bella celebrated her 5th birthday in May of 2013 and is a joyful and loving little girl.  Bella's miraculous life has only strengthened Rick and Karen's belief in the dignity of each of every life.
