Independence Day

In 1776, Philadelphia was witness to something never seen before.  A people came together to birth a nation, not based on an ethnicity but on an ideal.  The ideal was that we are created equal.  That our rights come from God, not from a king or from society.  That those rights include “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”  Other nations were built around their ethnic ancestry or geography, but we would be built around a set of common values.  It is those values woven throughout the Declaration of Independence that make us distinct.  Those values were so compelling that our founders made this pledge, “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”

Memorial Day

The signers of the Declaration of Independence pledged “to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor” as they laid the foundation upon which our country would be built.  Since 1776, members of our military have made that same pledge as they fought for and defended the freedom that we often take for granted.  In the 239 years since the signing of the Declaration, many have not only pledged their lives, but followed through on that commitment by giving their lives in defense of this great Country.  It is that commitment that we remember this Memorial Day.  Please join Patriot Voices in taking a moment out of your day to stop and reflect on the debt of gratitude we owe those brave men and women, and remember the lives of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
